Dunfermline East Conservative Association

Councillor Stuart Randall

Dunfermline East's Stuart Randall leads the Conservative group on Fife Council.

When he won the Dalgety Bay East ward, Stuart became the first Conservative on Fife Council which was formed by amalgamating the old Fife Regional Council and the three district councils.

Since then, Stuart has been joined by Mike Scott-Hayward (Elie, St Monans & Pittenweem).

About Stuart

Stuart is 41 years old (born on Friday 13th July, 1962). His father was born in Dundee and his mother in Birmingham. Stuart was born and raised in the West Midlands and worked in Berkshire before moving to Scotland in 1988. Dalgety Bay, within the Dunfermline East constituency, has been home to Stuart and his wife, Liz, for 16 years. They have been married for 18 years and have no children.

After graduating in Physics from the University of Birmingham, Stuart worked in electronics research & development with Racal, the originators of the now-huge Vodafone mobile phone company. In 1988 he joined Andrew Antennas at Lochgelly, Fife, where he worked as a Microwave Antenna Engineer. Both jobs involved that rarest of things these days: manufacturing in Britain.

In 1990, Stuart started his own engineering consultancy company specialising in radio coverage and propagation. Barns Brae Technology Limited (named after the hill at the east end of Dalgety Bay near his home) took him throughout the UK, to Europe, onto North Sea oil platforms and ships, and most recently to Hong Kong. The work involved a mix of computer aided design and on-site surveying, installation and commissioning. Stuart was never afraid to get his hands dirty and relished working in railway tunnels or inside the box-sections of bridges. Running BBT gave Stuart an invaluable insight into the small business sector, as he managed all the PAYE, VAT, annual reports and other routine affairs himself.

Stuart was elected to Fife Council in May 1999 for the Dalgety Bay East ward in which he lives. At the time he was the only Conservative, and he had a slim majority of just 25 votes. Stuart therefore laid his company dormant to make time for his constituents and to build up Tory representation. This clearly paid off as Stuart was re-elected to his ward in 2003 with 47% of the vote and a majority of 410.

In his spare time Stuart enjoys reading, travel, tennis, cycling, camping and skiing.

Stuart's Political Biography

A Conservative supporter since his teens, Stuart joined Dunfermline East Conservative Association in 1993. He stood in the Dalgety Bay West & Hillend ward of Fife Council in 1995 and was Chairman of the Association's Dalgety Bay Branch from 1996 to 1999.

Stuart was Campaign Manager for Dr Carrie Ruxton in the Scottish Parliament election campaign of 1998 - 1999 and was appointed Association Chairman prior to the European election of 1999.

Stuart was elected Councillor for Fife's Dalgety Bay East ward in May 1999, after defeating Gordon Brown's Agent, Rhona White, the sitting Labour Councillor. The first and at that time only Conservative elected to Fife Council since its inception in 1995, he is now the Leader of the Conservative group following by-election successes in North East Fife.

Stuart stood against Gordon Brown in the Dunfermline East seat at the Westminster election in 2001, coming third, and against Helen Eadie for the same seat at Holyrood in 2003.

Stuart is now Deputy Chairman of Dunfermline East Conservative Association and Honorary Treasurer of the Scottish Conservative Councillors' Association.
